“and We made you a community of the middle way” [Quran 2:143]

1: Surat al fatiha

Disclaimer: These notes are my personal reflections on the Quran and have been organised in a way that identifies and groups different themes that emerge from each chapter, with the intention to help facilitate a deeper understanding, help pinpoint where key messages are located in the Quran, and foster a closer relationship with Allah. The seven verses
  • In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.[1:1]
  • [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the universe [1:2]
  • The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful [1:3]
  • Master of the Day of Judgement [1:4]
  • You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. [1:5]
  • Guide us to the straight path [1:6]
  • The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favour, not of those who have earned [Your] wrath or of those who go astray [1:7]

Reflections: This opening verse is recited multiple times a day during pray as it is the chapter that we ‘open’ our prayers with. There’s something about it that provides that grounding and constant reminder of Allah’s presence. It used to remind me of the ‘Lord prayers’ that we would have to say during assembly at one of the schools I attended. Allah has many names to describe Himself and it is interesting that he uses these two names, The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful in this opening chapter – perhaps to remind us of his grace and kindness to a world where not everyone is a believer and not everyone is doing good. The Most Merciful gives me a constant sense of hope that Allah will forgive our shortcomings. I have heard interpretations that the former name refers to this world and the latter is for the hereafter. Beautiful is the reminder of the oneness of Allah and it is only to Him we should turn to for help and guidance to the straight path. The three paths outline the three types of people in this world – those that Allah has guided, those who have earned Allah’s anger (earned implies that those people’s actions have caused this anger) and those who go astray. It serves as a good reminder and helps keep us on track to focus on being on the straight path. There’s also something interesting about the fact that this chapter has seven verses…like the seven heavens..? Allah knows best.
